Business Process Modeling

Over the past month, we have been working on a series on UML Operator YouTube Channel pertaining to Business Process Engineering (BPE) and Business Process Modeling (BPM), including BPMN and other approaches.

I have been surprised by the enthusiasm around this subject and received a great deal of feedback. As time permits, we will keep publishing content relevant to BPM in 2024. The current content is part of two playlists: "Business Process Engineering" and "System Architecture Delivery". As we progress, in the UMLO Channel, we will focus on System Architecture Delivery while trying to keep our content in specific "interests" playlists.

The Business Process Engineering series (playlist) includes:

  1. Introduction to BPMN Part 1 (e37) - This is the start of a new multi-part series on BPM modeling. In this session we will introduce Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) as an alternative to just Activity Diagrams. BPMN, released in 2004, is a graphical modeling language specifically designed for representing business processes and workflows in a standardized manner. We will start with BPMN 1.x and we will bring in our other modeling approaches, recently covered in this channel, for support "simulations", "testing", and valida
  2. BPMN and Scenarios (e38) - System Engineering in Action! Model How Your Business Processes Really Work! In this session we will bring BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation) and Sparx UML Diagrams together for delivery. We will use a simple BPMN Model and Scenarios together to support how our Business Process Flows can technically work. These capabilities support Business Processes and technical Software and System Engineering. Chapters 0:00 - Intro 0:45 - Getting Started 2:34 - Bring in Scope 3:18 - Start BPMN Diag
  3. BPMN 1.0 and 1.1 Overview Part 2 - This is part 2 of a multi-part series on BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation). In this session we will focus on BPMN 1.0 and 1.1. We do this to prepare for BPMN 2 and understand the progression of each specification, including BPEL (Business Process Execution Language). For some, BPMN 1 is simpler and may fit the needs of modeling their Business Processes and Flow. We will touch on all the elements we will use as we progress in this series. Chapters 0:00 - Intro 0:40 - Getting Started 1:3
  4. BPMN 2 Overview What & When Part 3 - In our last session we touched on BPMN 1 and in this session we will move into BPMN 2. We will step through the various elements from the Sparx Enterprise Architect (EA) Toolbox and briefly explain some details for Tasks and Sub-Processes. We will close on the People involved in delivering BPMN (Business Process Models) and BPEL (Business Process Execution Code). Chapters 0:00 - Intro 1:14 - Pools and Lane Elements 2:12 - Start Elements 2:57 - Gateway Elements 3:40 - Intermediate Elements 5:10
  5. BPMN 1 Sparx EA Examples Part 4 - Here we are in Part 4 of a multi-part series on Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) using Sparx Enterprise Architect (EA). In this session we will take our understanding of BPMN at this point and start building a BPMN diagram made up of multiple namespaces (packages). Chapters 0:00 - Intro 4:01 - TOGAF Architecture Concepts 6:24 - Using Business Requirements 12:12 - Business Processes and Requirements 18:24 - BPMN 1 Properties 31:52 - Pools and Participants 34:32 - Starting Out in BPMN 3
  6. BPMN 1 Part 4 Content Fix at 36 Minute Marker - I made a video edit mistake 36 minutes into "BPMN 1 Sparx EA Examples - Part 4" video and a Subscriber caught it. Refer to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEP1gxtMGKI&t=2160s THANK YOU! It's an important subject area and I wanted to redo and present to you.
  7. BPMN 2 Sparx EA Examples Part 5 - In this Part 5 episode, of a multi-part series on BPMN, we will focus on BPMN 2. We will talk a little on Gateways and then get into BPMN 2 Sample Models. We will also expose Camunda as a BPMN modeling SAAS environment to build and deploy our models. This will allow us to show how to exchange Models between Sparx Enterprise Architect (EA) and platforms such as Camunda. Chapters 0:00 - Intro 1:38 - Gateways 5:07 - Simple Example of BPMN2 7:18 - Developing BPMN2 Models Anywhere 7:43 - Model Exch
  8. BPMN2 Choreography Part 6 - In this episode we are focusing on BPMN2 Choreography Modeling. We will cover what Choreography and Orchestration is. and what a Choreography Diagram is. I will share how I start this modeling with Stakeholders. I will show you how to validate your BPMN2 diagrams using Sparx EA. I will also show you a good Workspace Layout for BPMN2 modeling. And finally, we will step through a real Choreography Diagram. Chapters 0:00 - Intro 0:38 - Orchestration vs Choreography 1:48 - Validating Your Diagram

We are currently working on BPMN2 Delivery - Part 7 which takes what we have learned in UML Operator Channel over the past year, to delivery our Business Processes for our client stakeholders.
